What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a highly successful therapy that has been practiced for centuries. It is based on the well-founded premise that there is energy, called chi or qi, flowing through one’s body. Chi is understood to flow along energy pathways called meridians.

Acupuncturists believe a blocking or imbalance of the flow of chi at any point on a pathway may result in illness. Chinese medicine practitioners believe acupuncture unblocks and re-balances the flow of chi to restore health. It has also been shown to be effective in treating chronic, long standing, back and neck pain and is used in our clinic in conjunction with Chiropractic adjustments.

Acupuncture is a therapy that uses the application of needles and pressure at specific points on the body in order to manipulate the energy flow within the body.  The stimulated points are grouped along certain lines of energy flow called meridians.  Health is maintained when the body’s energy flows freely along these pathways.  If the flow of energy is deficient or disrupted, health is not maintained which results in illness or pain.

Acupuncturists use a system of deductive reasoning to diagnose and treat.  Because no two patients are the same, an extensive interview is given to provide vital clues to the patient’s overall health. Each treatment is then personalized to the individual’s signs and symptoms.  The treatment may include a number of different techniques including acupuncture, acupressure, electrical stimulation, Chinese herbal formulas, nutritional recommendations, and energy flow exercises.

An acupuncture treatment consists of inserting tiny thin needles at various locations into the body.  The number of needles and locations depends on the patient’s signs and symptoms. The pre-sterilized disposable needles are designed to be virtually painless. Acupuncture needles are a far distant cousin to those that patients encounter in traditional doctor’s offices. The point is so fine that patients often feel little or no sensation upon insertion. During treatments some patients experience a subtle warmth, pressure or tingling, while others feel nothing unusual, and most patients find an acupuncture treatment very relaxing.
